A Little Too Close For Comfort.
A 46-year-old man faces up to five years in prison
after pleading guilty to shooting his neighbor who he thought was mowing
his lawn too often.
Kevin French, 46, admitted shooting Nicholas Lanzillotto in the head with
an air rifle as his neighbor drove a riding mower last October 4 in the
town of Horseheads in southwestern New York. French entered the plea on
April 29, the second day of jury selection for his trial on a charge of
attempted murder.
Lanzillotto, 53, was hit by a pointed lead pellet from the gun, which is
often used in hunting skills contests. He spent two days in the hospital.
Under the plea agreement, French agreed to pay Lanzillotto's medical
expenses and also pay for repairs to his vehicle, which was hit by a
pellet. He will be sentenced to two to five years on June 13.
French had faced up to 25 years in prison if convicted of attempted
murder, assault and criminal mischief.
Authorities said that French and Lanzillotto had had a strained
relationship for months. French fired from his yard, and the victim
crawled across the street to a neighbor's home for help, they said.
