Close, But No Cigar.

STILLWATER, Minn. - You've got to give a St. Paul man credit. The enterprising chap, in what proved to be a futile attempt to have charges dropped against him, faked his own death in order to get pending charges dropped against him. But authorities soon realized the man was indeed alive and well and had him arrested.

Instead of appearing in Washington County District Court on charges stemming from a June, 2003 case,  he faxed a copy of a short obituary run in the local paper that showed he was dead. It was sent in care of the assigning judge from someone claiming to be the man's attorney.

Rather than dismiss the charges against the dead man - felony fourth-degree assault, obstructing the legal process with force and driving with a canceled license - a judge added the fax to the court file.

"I've never heard of someone faking their own death," said the state trooper who arrested the man in June and said he never believed the obituary. "People come up with great excuses why they can't make it to court."

Looks like he'll make his next court appearance - alive and well.
